Six years after the historic reorganisation that led to the creation of the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on October 31, 2019, the regions today stand as emblems of transformation, resilience, and unity. The Foundation Day, celebrated across India, marks not only a political milestone but also a reaffirmation of the nation’s collective vision of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’, a celebration of strength in diversity and shared progress.
Extending his greetings on the occasion, Admiral D.K. Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Vice Chairman, Islands Development Agency, conveyed heartfelt wishes to the residents of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh living in the A&N Islands.
He noted that both regions, like the Islands, have faced unique challenges and celebrated remarkable achievements, embodying a shared journey of resilience, harmony, and progress toward the Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.
“As we commemorate this significant milestone, we celebrate not only the glorious heritage and cultural richness of these regions but also the enduring bonds that unite them with our Islands,” the Lieutenant Governor stated, calling the day “a moment of pride and a renewed commitment to work together towards the vision of a developed India.”
The Foundation Day thus serves as both celebration and reflection of how the reorganisation of August 2019, which followed the abrogation of Article 370, continues to shape life in these territories. Over the past six years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed tangible improvements in connectivity, energy infrastructure, and civic life. Wider roads, stronger power grids, and improved urban services are visible markers of change.
Hydroelectric projects such as Pakal Dul, Kiru, and Ratle have expanded employment opportunities while boosting India’s clean energy goals. Tourism has also surged, drawing visitors to Srinagar’s houseboats and Jammu’s temples, contributing to the local economy.
Security and stability remain key administrative themes. Large-scale unrest has declined, and normalcy has gradually returned to daily routines in Srinagar and Jammu. Government initiatives for women’s empowerment, healthcare, and digital governance have reached rural pockets, symbolising inclusivity in development.
Yet, unemployment and political representation continue to be areas of public concern. Youth aspirations for jobs and statehood restoration echo through civic dialogues, as many call for deeper local participation in governance. The sixth Foundation Day thus carries both optimism and introspection, progress has been visible, but expectations remain high.
In Ladakh, the transformation has been equally significant but marked by distinct priorities. The UT has built more than 1,600 km of roads and adopted paperless administration. Flagship schemes promoting renewable energy, Pashmina-based industries, and women’s self-help groups have helped rural households diversify their incomes. Digital governance and tourism infrastructure are also strengthening Ladakh’s economic backbone.
However, voices from the region call for stronger constitutional safeguards, especially under the Sixth Schedule, to protect Ladakh’s fragile environment and unique cultural identity. Citizens stress that development must go hand in hand with sustainability and local decision-making power.
As the Foundation Day events unfold, from cultural programmes and ‘Run for Unity’ rallies to official ceremonies, they serve as reminders of both progress achieved and the journey yet to come. For residents of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the celebrations resonate deeply, reflecting a national bond that transcends geography and culture.
Six years on, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh stand at a crossroads between transformation and tradition. The spirit of the day lies not just in commemorating their creation as Union Territories, but in renewing the shared resolve to build a future rooted in unity, dignity, and inclusive growth, a vision of a truly Viksit Bharat where every region, from the Himalayas to the Islands, rises together.
