An Indian national was killed in a strike on a power and water desalination facility in Kuwait, marking a further escalation in the ongoing West Asia conflict and raising the death toll of Indian citizens affected in the region.
The incident occurred early Monday when a strike, attributed to Iran by Kuwaiti authorities, hit the critical infrastructure site, resulting in the death of an Indian worker and causing substantial damage to parts of the facility. Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water confirmed the casualty and described the attack as a direct assault on essential infrastructure.
The Indian Embassy in Kuwait confirmed the death and expressed condolences, stating that it is in close coordination with Kuwaiti authorities to extend necessary support and assistance. The mission indicated that efforts are underway to address the situation and facilitate all required measures following the incident.
Officials in Kuwait reported that emergency and technical teams were deployed immediately after the strike to assess the damage, secure the facility, and ensure that operations continued without major disruption. Despite the damage to a service building, authorities said that maintaining uninterrupted electricity and water supply remains a priority, with teams working to mitigate risks and stabilise operations.
The fatality adds to the growing number of Indian nationals killed in the wider regional conflict, which has intensified over recent weeks. With this incident, the total number of Indian deaths linked to the conflict has risen to at least eight.
The development follows a similar incident in the United Arab Emirates last week, where an Indian national died after being hit by falling debris during the interception of a ballistic missile over Abu Dhabi. The Indian Embassy in the UAE had also coordinated with local authorities to provide assistance in that case.
The broader conflict, now in its fifth week, began after coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, triggering a cycle of retaliatory actions. Since then, Iran has launched multiple drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf nations hosting American military installations.
These retaliatory strikes have led to casualties and damage to critical infrastructure across several countries in the region, heightening concerns over the safety of civilians, including foreign workers.
India has been closely monitoring the situation, with inter-ministerial reviews assessing the impact on Indian nationals in the region. Prior to the latest incident, official figures indicated seven fatalities and one person missing. Monday’s development marks a further deterioration in the situation for Indian citizens working in conflict-affected zones.
