India Rushes Measles Vaccines to Maldives Amid Outbreaks

Date:

New Delhi, June 12: India has dispatched 20,000 doses of measles vaccines and around three tonnes of medical supplies to the Maldives as the island nation grapples with a growing measles outbreak, reinforcing New Delhi’s role as a key development and emergency response partner in the Indian Ocean region.

The assistance was announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday, which said the supplies were being provided to support the Maldivian government’s efforts to strengthen immunisation coverage and protect public health amid a rise in confirmed measles cases.

According to the ministry, the aid package is expected to bolster the Maldives’ disease-control measures and help health authorities contain the spread of the highly contagious viral infection. The support comes as health officials in the Maldives continue to monitor a gradual increase in cases reported across the country this year.

In a statement, the MEA described the assistance as part of India’s continued commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, which focuses on strengthening cooperation and security partnerships across the maritime region.

“India, as a trusted First Responder, remains committed to working closely with the Government of Maldives in advancing shared priorities and for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries,” the ministry said.

The latest assistance follows reports from the Maldives’ Health Protection Agency (HPA), which confirmed four additional measles cases during the past week. The new infections have taken the total number of confirmed measles cases reported in the country in 2026 to 15.

In response to the outbreak, the HPA has urged residents to take preventive precautions, including wearing masks and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms develop. Health authorities have advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever or red skin rashes to isolate themselves until test results are confirmed.

Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases and can spread rapidly in communities with insufficient immunisation coverage. Public health experts note that vaccination remains the most effective means of preventing outbreaks and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children.

The shipment of vaccines and medical supplies reflects India’s longstanding practice of extending humanitarian and health assistance to neighbouring countries during emergencies. Over the years, New Delhi has supplied medicines, vaccines, food aid and disaster relief materials to several countries in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region during periods of crisis.

The latest development also comes at a time when bilateral ties between India and the Maldives have shown signs of strengthening after a period of diplomatic strain. Both countries have recently reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas ranging from health and infrastructure to maritime security and development partnerships.

On Wednesday, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in terms of consecutive days in office. In his message, Muizzu emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations and expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Diplomatic engagement between the two countries has also remained active in recent months. Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam during her official visit to India and reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development priorities.

Analysts view the latest medical assistance as another example of India’s efforts to maintain its role as a reliable partner in the region while addressing humanitarian and public health challenges faced by neighbouring countries.

As the Maldives intensifies its response to the outbreak, the vaccine shipment is expected to support immunisation campaigns and strengthen disease-control measures. For India, the assistance reinforces its position as a first responder in the Indian Ocean region and highlights the growing importance of health diplomacy in regional cooperation efforts.
