India and the Netherlands are closely aligned in outlook and values despite their vast differences in size, Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel said on Friday, underlining the need for both democracies to strengthen cooperation amid shifting global geopolitics.
Speaking during a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi, van Weel said the two countries share a common commitment to democracy, free trade and a rules-based international order, which makes closer collaboration essential in turbulent times. He thanked Jaishankar for the warm welcome and noted that recent engagements had already yielded concrete outcomes.
The Dutch Foreign Minister said both sides had agreed on a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in security and defence, alongside collaboration in emerging technologies. He pointed out that as technology plays an increasingly important role in societies, it is vital for like-minded democracies to work together to ensure that technological advancements align with shared norms and values.
Referring to his visit to India, van Weel highlighted the presence of Dutch companies such as NXP, which are already well-established in the Indian market and are keen to expand collaboration further. He observed that while India and the Netherlands differ geographically, they are “very aligned” psychologically and in mentality, forming a strong basis for a long-term partnership.
Earlier, on Thursday, van Weel met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. Following the meeting, the two sides signed a Letter of Intent aimed at deepening defence and maritime security cooperation. The agreement includes joint efforts to protect open and secure sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific region, reflecting shared strategic concerns.
The visiting minister also held discussions with Congress MP and chair of India’s Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor. According to van Weel, the meeting focused on how domestic political debates shape foreign policy, India’s evolving role on the global stage, and areas where bilateral cooperation can be expanded.
Van Weel arrived in New Delhi on Thursday after completing engagements in Mumbai. During his Mumbai visit, he called on the Netherlands Consulate and interacted with students, entrepreneurs and social partners, describing such interactions as crucial for strengthening people-to-people links that underpin bilateral relations.
The Dutch Foreign Minister also met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss cooperation at the state level. The talks explored opportunities in maritime innovation, the circular economy, water management and agriculture, sectors seen as key to expanding India–Netherlands collaboration at the sub-national level.
The visit reflects growing engagement between India and the Netherlands across defence, technology, trade and sustainability, with both sides signalling intent to deepen their partnership in response to global and regional challenges.
