CCI Initiates Probe Into IndiGo Flight Disruptions Under Competition Act

Date:

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken cognisance of information filed against airline IndiGo in connection with recent flight disruptions reported across multiple routes in the country. The matter relates to disruptions witnessed in the aviation sector, which have affected passengers on various domestic routes.

According to an official release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Commission has conducted a preliminary assessment of the information placed before it. Based on this initial examination, the CCI has decided to proceed further in the matter in accordance with the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002.

The decision indicates that the competition watchdog found sufficient grounds at the preliminary stage to examine the allegations in greater detail. However, the CCI has not disclosed specific details of the complaint or the nature of the alleged conduct at this stage, in keeping with standard regulatory procedure.

The Competition Commission of India is mandated to prevent practices that have an adverse effect on competition, promote and sustain competition in markets, protect the interests of consumers, and ensure freedom of trade. Any inquiry initiated under the Competition Act follows a structured process, beginning with a prima facie assessment before moving to a detailed investigation, if warranted.

IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline by market share, has faced scrutiny in recent months amid widespread flight delays and disruptions across the aviation sector. The current development does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing but signals the start of regulatory examination under competition law.

Further action in the case will depend on the outcome of proceedings initiated by the Commission in line with statutory provisions. The CCI is expected to follow due process as laid down under the Competition Act, 2002, before arriving at any conclusions.
