Sri Vijaya Puram/Campbell Bay, June 6: Authorities in Campbell Bay have intensified their crackdown on illicit liquor activities, with separate operations by the Excise Department and Campbell Bay Police resulting in the destruction of around 200 litres of fermenting lahan and the seizure of 10 litres of illicit liquor over two consecutive days.
In the first operation, the Excise Team attached to Police Station Campbell Bay conducted a jungle search in the Rajiv Nagar area on June 4 as part of an ongoing drive against illegal liquor production. During the search, officials detected approximately 200 litres of fermenting lahan stored in jerry cans in a secluded location.
The illicit material was destroyed on the spot to prevent its use in the manufacture of illegal liquor. Officials said the action formed part of the department’s continuing efforts to curb unlawful brewing activities and ensure compliance with excise regulations in the region.
The Excise Department reiterated its commitment to taking strict action against those involved in illegal liquor production and appealed to the public to share information regarding such activities with the authorities.
In a separate enforcement action on June 5, a police team from Campbell Bay Police Station seized 10 litres of illicit liquor from a man near the Fish Landing Jetty during an anti-illicit liquor operation.
According to police, a team comprising HC S. Ganeshan, PC Abhishek Narayan, HG(V) G. Sinu and HG(V) Sandeep Tirkey was conducting routine checks and searches against illegal activities when they noticed a suspicious individual carrying two jerry cans near the jetty at around 6.30 pm.
Upon inspection, police allegedly found five litres of illicit liquor in a red-coloured jerry can and another five litres in a yellow-coloured jerry can, bringing the total seizure to 10 litres.
Samples of the seized liquor were collected for chemical examination, while the remaining contents were sealed and taken into custody in the presence of witnesses, police said.
The individual was identified as Chelluri Vijay Kumar (32), a resident of RPRS Colony, Shelter No. 65, Campbell Bay.
Police stated that the accused was found violating provisions of Section 32 of Regulation III of 1876. A notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was served, directing him to appear before Campbell Bay Police Station on June 6 for further proceedings.
Officials said the entire seizure process was documented using the e-Sakshya Mobile App. Further legal action is being initiated in accordance with the law.
The two operations highlight the continuing efforts of enforcement agencies in Great Nicobar to tackle illegal liquor production and distribution. Authorities have maintained that sustained surveillance, search operations and community cooperation remain essential to preventing illicit brewing activities and ensuring public safety.
