India’s iconic India Gate will switch off its lights for one hour on Saturday night as part of Earth Hour 2026, joining a global movement aimed at raising awareness on climate change and environmental sustainability.
The lights-out observance is scheduled between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., during which individuals, institutions, and public landmarks across the country are expected to turn off non-essential lighting in a coordinated effort. The initiative marks the 20th anniversary of Earth Hour, observed this year under the theme “Give an Hour for Earth.”
Organised annually by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney as a symbolic gesture to promote environmental awareness. Over the years, it has evolved into a large-scale global campaign involving participation from more than 190 countries and territories, with millions of people, businesses, and governments taking part.

Authorities in several Indian cities have called on residents to participate in the one-hour switch-off by reducing electricity use and reflecting on environmental responsibility. In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation urged citizens to turn off unnecessary lights during the designated hour as part of the nationwide effort.
GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan appealed to the public to view the exercise as more than a symbolic act. He said the initiative represents a collective effort toward sustainability, encouraging individuals to contribute to environmental protection through small but meaningful actions.
The participation of prominent landmarks remains central to the campaign’s visibility. In previous years, structures such as Rashtrapati Bhavan and other national monuments have observed the lights-off event, reinforcing its significance in India’s public and cultural landscape.
Across the country and globally, the coordinated switch-off is expected to highlight the urgency of addressing climate change and conserving natural resources. The initiative focuses on encouraging behavioural change, including reduced energy consumption and increased awareness of environmental impact.
Experts note that while Earth Hour is largely symbolic, it plays a role in mobilising public attention toward sustainability challenges. The campaign seeks to encourage long-term commitments from individuals and institutions to adopt environmentally responsible practices and support conservation efforts.
As India joins the global observance, the one-hour blackout at major landmarks, including India Gate, is expected to serve as a visual reminder of the need for collective action in addressing environmental concerns.
