India Named ‘Country of the Year’ at BIOFACH 2026 Organic Trade Fair

Date:

India has been designated the ‘Country of the Year’ at BIOFACH 2026, the world’s leading trade fair for organic products, scheduled to take place from February 10 to 13 in Nuremberg, Germany, according to an official statement issued Tuesday.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is coordinating India’s participation in the event, planning a prominent presence that reflects the country’s expanding role in global organic trade. Officials said the scale of participation this year is significantly larger compared with previous editions, indicating rising demand for Indian organic products and broader involvement from exporters, industry bodies and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).

The India Country Pavilion, established by APEDA, will cover 1,074 square metres and include 67 co-exhibitors. Participants include exporters of organic commodities, FPOs, cooperatives, organic testing laboratories, state government agencies and commodity boards. The pavilion aims to present India’s organic agriculture capabilities and promote trade opportunities in international markets.

A wide range of organic products will be showcased, including rice, oilseeds, herbs, spices, pulses, cashew, ginger, turmeric, large cardamom, cinnamon, mango puree and essential oils. Officials stated that the display is intended to reflect both the diversity of Indian agricultural output and the increasing global interest in organically produced food items.

Representatives from more than 20 states and union territories are participating in the India Pavilion, highlighting regional diversity in organic cultivation. Participating regions include Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand.

The official statement noted that the participation emphasises region-specific organic produce and value-added food products, illustrating India’s continued expansion in international organic trade engagement over recent years.

Alongside product displays, visitors to the pavilion will be offered curated food tastings showcasing Indian organic flavours. Live sampling of biryani prepared using organic basmati rice and spices has been planned as part of promotional activities. Additionally, five geographical indication (GI)-tagged rice varieties, Indrayani, Navara, Gobindbhog, Red rice and Chak Hao (Black rice), will be presented to highlight traditional heritage rice varieties.

APEDA has also initiated extensive branding and promotional campaigns across key locations at the Nuremberg Messe Exhibition Centre to support India’s designation as Country of the Year. These initiatives are intended to increase visibility of Indian organic products among international buyers and trade fair attendees.

Officials stated that growing global interest in sustainability and environmentally responsible consumption has contributed to increased attention on organic agriculture. India’s recognition as Country of the Year at BIOFACH 2026, according to the statement, underscores its position in the global organic agriculture sector and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in international organic markets.
