A two-day Hindi workshop titled ‘Useful e-tools for administrative works in Hindi’ commenced today at the Training Centre of the Department of Official Language for staff members of various Secretariat sections under the A&N Administration. The initiative aims to encourage the use of Hindi in official functions by equipping staff with digital tools developed by the Government of India.
The session was inaugurated by Secretary (Official Language), Richa, who underscored the importance of using Hindi for administrative tasks, especially as per the Official Language Rules, 1976, which categorize the Andaman and Nicobar Islands under Region ‘A’. She emphasized that all government offices in the territory are expected to conduct the majority of their official work in Hindi.
Speaking at the event, Richa highlighted that despite the multilingual demographic of the islands, Hindi has become the primary link language among residents. Noting that most government staff have studied Hindi at the school level, she expressed confidence that with proper training and encouragement, they could effectively perform official duties in Hindi. She further mentioned that the central government has developed several software tools to facilitate such work and encouraged participants to make full use of the workshop to improve their Hindi proficiency in administrative settings.
Earlier in the program, Rajendra Indwar, Deputy Secretary (Official Language), welcomed the attendees and outlined the objective of the workshop. He stated that the goal is to familiarize employees with user-friendly e-tools that can significantly aid in the execution of government tasks in Hindi. He added that similar training initiatives will be extended to other departments in the near future.
As part of the workshop, Ajay Singh, Junior Translation Officer, conducted a technical session that covered topics including the activation of Unicode on computers, executing official tasks in Hindi using the e-Office platform, and making effective use of translation software such as Kanthasth 2.0 and Bhashini. He also introduced participants to the integration of artificial intelligence for Hindi language processing, enhancing the efficiency of routine administrative tasks.
The event marks a significant push toward the promotion of Hindi as an official medium in government functioning within the Union Territory. By leveraging modern digital tools, the administration aims to simplify language-based workflows while reinforcing the constitutional mandate of promoting Hindi in official use.
The workshop will continue tomorrow with further hands-on training and demonstrations on e-governance tools for Hindi usage.
