Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 10:
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has formally opened the online portal for nominations and recommendations for the prestigious Padma Awards 2025, namely, the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The nomination window began on March 15, 2025, and will remain open until July 31, 2025.
These national honours, among India’s highest civilian awards, are conferred annually on Republic Day (January 26) to individuals who have demonstrated “work of distinction” and made exceptional contributions to their respective fields. The recognition extends across a wide spectrum of disciplines including Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Services, Trade and Industry, among others.
A hallmark of the Padma Awards is their inclusive eligibility. According to the official Padma Awards portal (www.padmaawards.gov.in), any individual regardless of race, occupation, position or gender can be nominated. The system is designed to recognise both well-known personalities as well as unsung heroes who have quietly contributed to society in impactful ways.
Self-nominations are also permitted, making the process more democratic and open to grassroots-level contributors.
Nominations and recommendations are to be made exclusively via the online portal at www.padmaawards.gov.in, which has been developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Users are required to fill out a detailed form, including a narrative citation of up to 800 words that highlights the nominee’s distinguished and exceptional achievements or service in their chosen domain.
It is critical that all fields in the online form are completed accurately, as incomplete or vague entries may result in disqualification. The MHA has provided a comprehensive step-by-step guide on the same website to assist citizens in navigating the nomination process effectively.
A copy of the Padma Award statutes and rules is also available on the website to ensure transparency and clarity in the selection process.
In the context of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, nominations or recommendations, particularly those being submitted through government or institutional channels, must be sent to the Office of the Assistant Secretary (General Administration) on or before July 4, 2025, to allow for internal review and forwarding before the national deadline.
The Padma Awards, instituted in 1954, have grown into a symbol of national gratitude, honouring not just public figures but also lesser-known individuals whose work may not often come into the spotlight. These awards have over the years recognised tribal leaders, farmers, conservationists, school teachers, social workers, and doctors from remote parts of India, affirming that impact, not popularity, is the central criterion for recognition.
Each year, the President of India confers the awards in a ceremonial event held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The final list of awardees is compiled by the Padma Awards Committee, which includes senior government officials, subject experts, and civil society representatives, and is approved by the Prime Minister and the President of India.
With the nomination process now fully digitised and more inclusive than ever before, the Government has placed the power to recognise excellence directly into the hands of the people. The move is seen as a way to democratise national honours and ensure that grassroots achievers have an equal shot at national recognition alongside high-profile figures.
As the July 31 deadline approaches, citizens, organizations, and institutions across India, and especially those in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are being encouraged to proactively participate in this national exercise by nominating individuals whose contributions have had a meaningful, transformative impact on society.
