Sri Vijaya Puram, April 27: Air connectivity to the Nicobar group of islands will remain suspended for four days after a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Chennai Flight Information Region (FIR) halted helicopter operations starting April 28, 2026.
According to the public notice, helicopter services to all islands in the Nicobar group will remain non-operational from April 28 to May 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The announcement was issued on April 26 from Sri Vijaya Puram to inform residents and travellers of the disruption.
The suspension affects all scheduled helicopter operations that serve as a primary mode of transport between islands, particularly in remote areas where alternative connectivity options remain limited. These services are widely used for routine travel, medical emergencies, and transportation of essential supplies.
Authorities have not announced any alternative arrangements or revised schedules during the suspension period, leaving routine movement and emergency response dependent on existing ground and maritime options, where available.
The NOTAM was issued by the Chennai Flight Information Region, which regulates airspace operations in the region. The notice enforces temporary restrictions on helicopter movement within the specified time frame.
Authorities did not provide specific operational details beyond the suspension timeline. The notice remains in effect until May 1, 2026, or until further instructions are issued.
Helicopter services have historically served as a key link for inter-island connectivity in the Nicobar group, supporting transportation needs across geographically isolated areas.
The administration has advised the general public to take note of the temporary suspension while planning travel during the affected period.
