Centre Extends GSTAT Appeal Filing Deadline to July 31 Amid Portal Congestion

Date:

New Delhi, June 30: The Centre has extended the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) to July 31 after a sharp rise in filings led to technical difficulties on the GSTAT portal, providing taxpayers and businesses additional time to submit pending appeals.

The Ministry of Finance announced the extension on Tuesday, stating that the revised deadline applies to appeals filed under Section 112(1) read with Section 112(3) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act.

According to the Ministry, the decision followed representations from stakeholders who reported technical disruptions while accessing the GSTAT portal due to a heavy volume of appeal filings in recent days. The government said the increase in traffic affected the smooth filing of appeals, prompting the extension to facilitate taxpayers.

The last date for filing appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal had earlier been fixed as June 30 through a notification issued on September 17, 2025. With the latest notification, eligible taxpayers now have until July 31 to file their appeals before the Tribunal.

Official figures released by the Ministry indicate that nearly 30,000 appeals were filed during the last 15 days alone. The filing volume peaked at around 5,500 appeals in a single day, contributing to congestion on the GSTAT portal and resulting in technical difficulties reported by users.

The Finance Ministry has advised taxpayers not to wait until the final day to file appeals and instead complete the process well in advance to avoid last-minute portal congestion and ensure timely submission of applications.

The extension comes as the government continues to record steady growth in tax collections during the current financial year.

According to official data, gross Goods and Services Tax collections increased by 3.2 per cent year-on-year to ₹1.94 lakh crore in May despite geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Net GST collections rose by 3.3 per cent to ₹1.67 lakh crore, while GST refunds increased by 2.6 per cent to ₹27,281 crore during the month.

The Income Tax Department has also reported growth in direct tax collections. Net direct tax collections during the period from April 1 to June 17 of the 2026-27 financial year increased by 14.64 per cent year-on-year to ₹5.21 lakh crore, compared with ₹4.55 lakh crore collected during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Gross direct tax collections also registered an increase of 12.46 per cent, reaching ₹6.10 lakh crore during the same period, reflecting continued growth in tax revenue collections.
