The school football grounds of South Andaman were abuzz with energy as the quarterfinal matches of the Inter School Football Knockout Tournament for girls were held at Bhatubasti. Organized by the Sports Section of the Deputy Education Office under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, the matches aimed at promoting sports participation among young girls in primary and secondary schools.
Four quarterfinal matches in the secondary girls’ category were played with a competitive spirit and strong team dynamics. GSSS School Line edged past GSSS Model with a 1-0 win, while GDMS (SS) delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over GSSS Garacharma. GSSS Girls secured a 2-0 win against SSVM, and SSS KV I narrowly defeated SSS Nirmala 2-1.
The matches highlighted the increasing interest and participation of girl students in structured sports activities. With coaching, encouragement, and organized tournaments, schools are gradually shifting the focus towards gender-inclusive sports infrastructure.
The ongoing tournament has brought to the forefront not just individual talent but also team strategy and inter-school collaboration. Educators and sports coordinators see the event as a vital stepping stone in cultivating a sporting culture that benefits students beyond academics.
As the semifinals are scheduled to follow at the same venue, the enthusiasm among the teams and their supporters continues to build. The emphasis on primary and secondary school girls ensures that the programme has long-term developmental impact, introducing sports at an early and formative stage.
The tournament is more than just a contest; it is a symbol of how government-led initiatives can support social transformation. By creating platforms for participation and recognition, such events are crucial in breaking traditional gender norms and encouraging girls to engage in competitive physical activity.
With the Department of Education backing this initiative, and community support steadily rising, the tournament serves as a model of inclusive youth development. Beyond the pitch, it also builds leadership, discipline, and self-confidence among participants.
The matches so far have reflected the growing capabilities of school-based sports programs in the Islands. With well-organized fixtures and structured support, more such tournaments are likely to follow, expanding the reach and impact of girls’ sports across Andaman and Nicobar.
