Rs 4.5 Crore Approved for Garacharma–Dollygunj Road Widening and Safety Improvements

Date:

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has approved a Rs 4.50 crore project to improve the Garacharma–ITI–Dollygunj road, a vital alternate route connecting Garacharma to Sri Vijaya Puram. The upgrade targets the stretch from Garacharma Basti to Anganwadi Attam Pahad Junction, which has suffered significant wear and tear due to heavy commercial traffic and the accumulation of construction material along the roadway.

Authorities have prioritized the project to address commuter hardships and enhance safety and traffic flow in this critical corridor. The road serves as a key link between Garacharma Basti and Dollygunj, connecting to the lone National Highway in the area, and is crucial for both residential and commercial transit.

The scope of work includes resurfacing the existing road, reconstruction of drains and culverts to strengthen durability, and widening the blacktop from 3.6 metres to 5.50 metres. These improvements aim to accommodate increasing traffic, reduce congestion, and provide a safer commuting experience for residents and transport operators alike.

Officials note that the project will not only enhance connectivity but also facilitate smoother access to the National Highway, thereby improving overall transportation efficiency in the region. The upgradation reflects the Administration’s ongoing commitment to addressing public concerns and bolstering essential civic infrastructure.

The widened and resurfaced roadway is expected to significantly improve traffic management and ensure long-term durability, mitigating current risks posed by overburdened roadways and inadequate drainage. Local residents and commercial operators stand to benefit from enhanced safety, reduced travel time, and a more reliable road network.

The sanctioned project forms part of the Administration’s broader strategy to strengthen key road corridors across the Union Territory, addressing infrastructure gaps and improving the quality of civic amenities. By expanding the width of the blacktop and modernizing drainage systems, the project anticipates the growing demands of traffic while ensuring environmental and structural stability.

Upon completion, the upgraded Garacharma–ITI–Dollygunj road will serve as a more efficient and safer route for daily commuters, public transport services, and commercial vehicles, directly impacting the movement of goods and people between Garacharma and Sri Vijaya Puram.

The Administration has emphasized timely implementation and adherence to quality standards to ensure the project meets both safety and long-term infrastructure goals. By focusing on both structural durability and traffic efficiency, the project aims to provide lasting benefits to the local community and strengthen the overall transport network in the Andaman Islands.
