Free Stargazing Event at Corbyn’s Cove to Mark International Astronomy Day on May 3

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 1:
In a bid to boost niche tourism and celebrate International Astronomy Day, the Andaman & Nicobar Tourism Department, in collaboration with Andaman Stargazing, is hosting a special free stargazing session on May 3, 2025. The event will take place at Corbyn’s Cove Beach from 6pm to 8pm, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky through professional telescopes.

The islands, with their minimal light pollution and proximity to the equator, offer some of the clearest and most breathtaking night skies in India, ideal for celestial observation and astrophotography. Visitors will get a chance to observe the moon, visible planets, and distant stars under the guidance of expert Astro communicators.

“This event is designed to give people a hands-on introduction to the cosmos while raising awareness about dark sky preservation,” a Tourism Department spokesperson explained.

Astro Tourism is an emerging niche globally, attracting space enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers seeking offbeat experiences. Officials believe the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have immense potential to become a prime destination for Astro Tourism, thanks to their pristine skies and unique geographic location.

“We aim to showcase the islands not just for their beaches and biodiversity but also as a gateway to the stars,” said a tourism official involved in organizing the event.

The session is free and open to the public, making it accessible to locals, tourists, families, and astronomy enthusiasts. Participants will also learn basic stargazing techniques and gain insights into the importance of preserving unpolluted night skies for scientific and recreational purposes.

The Tourism Department invites everyone to Corbyn’s Cove on May 3 for an unforgettable night under the stars, a celebration of human curiosity and the wonders of the universe.
