The Election Commission of India (ECI) is convening a two-day meeting with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all states and union territories starting Wednesday to review preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The session will take place at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Dwarka, New Delhi, and is expected to conclude on Thursday morning.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vineet Joshi, Deputy Election Commissioners, and other senior officials, will attend the deliberations. The Commission aims to finalise plans for the nationwide rollout of the SIR following the meeting.
ECI officials stated that the session will assess compliance with directives issued during a previous meeting on September 10, which outlined preparatory steps for the SIR process. The earlier meeting instructed state officials to map as many electors as possible to previous electoral rolls to reduce the need for voters to resubmit documents during the revision exercise.
Sources indicated that the two-day meeting will also cover a range of administrative matters, including the status of tasks assigned to Chief Electoral Officers last month and identification of areas that require further attention. Specific targets for the SIR exercise are expected to be finalised during the discussions, with the central objective being the initiation of the process nationwide by the end of this year.
Officials added that the meeting will explore whether the SIR should be conducted simultaneously across the country or in phases, taking into account regional factors such as weather conditions, agricultural cycles, examination schedules, and administrative convenience. This planning is aimed at ensuring smooth execution and minimizing disruption for voters and election officials alike.
The Special Intensive Revision is a key exercise intended to update electoral rolls comprehensively, ensuring accuracy in voter lists and facilitating smooth conduct of elections. By mapping existing electors and addressing gaps in the rolls, the ECI aims to strengthen the integrity and inclusiveness of the electoral process.
This meeting marks the second convening of state CEOs in just over a month, reflecting the Commission’s emphasis on meticulous planning and coordination with state election authorities ahead of the nationwide exercise. Officials noted that the discussions will be critical in determining the timeline and modalities for the SIR rollout, which is expected to cover all eligible voters across India.
The ECI has emphasised the importance of efficient coordination between central and state election authorities, citing the need to complete preparatory tasks, address logistical challenges, and ensure public awareness ahead of the revision. By the conclusion of the meeting, the Commission is expected to issue a comprehensive roadmap for the nationwide SIR exercise, paving the way for updated and accurate electoral rolls.
