In a strong message against crimes targeting children, the Special POCSO Court in North & Middle Andaman sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting his minor granddaughter. The verdict was delivered on June 27, 2025, by Hon’ble Special Judge (POCSO) Shri Subhajit Basu, who also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict, Brojan Biswas, in connection with Crime No. 10/2022 registered at Diglipur Police Station.
The case, filed under Sections 5(j)(ii)(n)/6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, stemmed from the disturbing revelation by the minor girl that her maternal grandfather had repeatedly subjected her to sexual assault. Following the victim’s disclosure, the police initiated swift legal proceedings, ensuring the accused was booked without delay.
The successful conviction is credited to the meticulous investigation carried out by Inspector Kabita Kritonia and Sub-Inspector Deepti Minj under the supervision of then SHO, Inspector N.S. Stalin of PS Diglipur. Their prompt response, attention to detail, and commitment to justice played a crucial role in securing a conviction in this sensitive case.
Terming the judgment as a landmark, officials stated it serves as a stern warning that offenses against children will invite the strictest punishment under the law. The Andaman & Nicobar Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards sexual crimes and assured the public of their unwavering focus on protecting the rights and dignity of vulnerable individuals.
The police department has also urged the public to come forward with any credible information about criminal or illegal activities by contacting the nearest police station or calling helpline numbers 100, 112, or 03192-273344.
