Kolkata, May 20: Police have detained Debraj Chakraborty in connection with a 2021 post-election violence case, bringing renewed focus on allegations linked to political unrest following the Assembly polls in West Bengal.
Officials confirmed that Chakraborty, a councillor of the Biddhannagar Municipal Corporation and husband of Aditi Munshi, was taken into custody on Tuesday night. However, police have not officially clarified whether the detention amounts to a formal arrest.
According to sources, the action relates to an earlier case associated with violence reported after the 2021 Assembly election results. Chakraborty is currently being interrogated by investigators as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The case is linked to the death of a BJP worker, Prosenjit Biswas, in 2021, which had triggered significant political tension at the time. Allegations had surfaced that the worker was forced to take his own life, with complaints filed citing post-poll violence. The incident had become a flashpoint in the broader narrative of unrest following the elections.
Investigative sources indicated that Chakraborty has been detained for questioning specifically in connection with this case. However, no formal statement has been issued by the police detailing the exact charges or the status of the proceedings.
Chakraborty is considered close to Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader in the Trinamool Congress. His detention has drawn attention within political circles, especially amid ongoing scrutiny of alleged incidents of violence linked to past electoral cycles.
In the political backdrop, reactions have surfaced on social media, with several leaders raising allegations regarding Chakraborty’s involvement in criminal activities and calling for stricter action. These developments follow a shift in the political landscape after the BJP secured a majority in the state, leading to increased enforcement actions in cases involving alleged law violations.
Separately, in the recent Assembly elections, Aditi Munshi, who had contested from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency, suffered a defeat. She had drawn public attention after being seen visibly emotional outside a counting centre following the result. Both she and her husband had declined to engage with the media at that time.
The latest detention comes amid what officials describe as ongoing efforts to address pending cases and act against individuals accused in incidents of violence or unlawful activities. Law enforcement agencies have reportedly been reviewing older cases, particularly those linked to post-election unrest, as part of broader enforcement measures.
As of now, Chakraborty remains under questioning, and further action will depend on the findings of the investigation. Authorities have not indicated any timeline for the next steps, while the case continues to draw political and public attention.
