Sri Vijaya Puram, October 10: The need for early identification, regular health screening and timely intervention for children with disabilities was highlighted at a programme organised by the Composite Regional Centre (CRC), Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at Brookshabad, where a free vision screening camp and parent training programme brought together families, medical professionals and rehabilitation service providers.
The observance of World Sight Day and World Cerebral Palsy Day 2026 was organised by CRC in association with PANKH NGO and Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital. Around 95 people, including persons with disabilities, children, parents, medical professionals, dignitaries and CRC staff, attended the programme.
Sumithamol S., Director of CRC A&N Islands, emphasised that early identification, timely intervention and routine health screening are essential to improving the quality of life of children with disabilities. She said the centre would continue working with parents, medical professionals and partner organisations to support accessible healthcare, rehabilitation and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The free vision screening camp offered eye examinations, medical assessments and consultations to persons with disabilities and their family members. The programme also included a parent training session.
Mohit Mishra, Director of the Directorate of Social Welfare, attended as chief guest and highlighted CRC’s work in rehabilitation, therapeutic services and skill development for persons with disabilities across the islands.
Swami Sudhananda of Chinmaya Mission, who attended as a special guest, stressed the importance of compassion, patience and collective support in helping children realise their potential. Naresh Chander Lal, Swachh Bharat ambassador, was also present as a special guest.
During the programme, Komal Anand, president of PANKH NGO, and her team were recognised for donating a lamination machine to CRC’s Vocational Training Unit. The equipment will support the unit’s skill-development activities aimed at promoting self-reliance among persons with disabilities.
The programme concluded with the administration of the Swachhta Pledge and a vote of thanks.
