Sri Vijaya Puram, July 31: Fourteen years after a murder case was registered in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a court in Sri Vijaya Puram has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the death of a woman who sustained fatal burn injuries during a domestic dispute, bringing the long-pending criminal trial to its conclusion.
The Additional District and Sessions Court, Sri Vijaya Puram, convicted Amit Kumar Tirkey, a resident of Quarry Basti, Namunaghar, in connection with FIR No. 111/2012 registered at Ograbraj Police Station on August 1, 2012, under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The judgment of conviction was delivered on July 29, 2026.
According to the prosecution case placed before the court, the victim suffered fatal burn injuries after she was intentionally set on fire during a domestic dispute. The case was registered by Ograbraj Police Station, following which an investigation was carried out.
Court records show that the prosecution relied on oral and documentary evidence during the trial to establish the charges against the accused. The investigation in the case was conducted by Inspector Sahil Shamsuddin.
Following the conviction, the court pronounced its sentence on July 30, 2026. Amit Kumar Tirkey was awarded rigorous imprisonment for life and ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 50,000.
The court further directed that the fine amount be paid to the victim’s son.
