Surprise inspection targets tobacco sale near Ferrargunj schools

Date:

The District Administration, South Andaman, in collaboration with local Police, carried out a joint inspection in Ferrargunj Tehsil today to enforce provisions under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA), ensuring that shops near educational institutions comply with the law prohibiting tobacco sales within 100 yards of school premises.

The surprise inspection covered commercial establishments near GSSS Ferrargunj, GSSS Namunaghar, and GPS Ranchi Basti (Namunaghar Village). Revenue officials, accompanied by police personnel, inspected multiple shops, verified compliance, and advised vendors to strictly follow the Act’s provisions.

Under Sections 6 and 12 of COTPA, the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products near schools is strictly prohibited. Officials reiterated that these inspections are part of an ongoing campaign to curb youth access to tobacco and reinforce health safeguards around educational zones.

During the checks, vendors were reminded that violations would attract strict legal action, and awareness about the penalties under the Act was reinforced. The Administration stressed that regular enforcement and monitoring are critical in maintaining a tobacco-free environment for students.

The district authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the health and well-being of students and the larger community by ensuring that COTPA guidelines are rigorously implemented across the region.

Officials stated that regular surprise checks will continue to identify violators, emphasizing zero tolerance toward non-compliance. The initiative aligns with the Administration’s broader health and safety goals, targeting the reduction of tobacco exposure among youth ,  a priority under national and local public health missions.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate by reporting instances of illegal tobacco sales near schools. Complaints or information can be shared via the District Control Room through phone numbers 03192-240127, 238881, 1070 or through WhatsApp at 9531888844. The Administration has assured that informant identities will remain confidential, encouraging public participation in sustaining community health.

The drive marks another step in South Andaman’s sustained anti-tobacco enforcement strategy, reinforcing the government’s commitment to health-based governance and public awareness.
