CIARI Marks World Intellectual Property Day

SRI VIJAYA PURAM, MAY 3: Celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2025 with purpose and insight, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) hosted a dedicated program on May 2, highlighting the vital role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in fostering innovation and driving the Indian economy forward.

The event, chaired by ICAR-CIARI Director E.B. Chakurkar, brought together scientists, project staff, and students from across research institutions including ICAR-CIARI, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). With a total of 72 participants, the celebration provided a platform to discuss how intellectual property tools like patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and copyrights support and incentivize creativity across sectors.

In his keynote address, Director Chakurkar underscored the need for sustained awareness and protection of intellectual property. “Intellectual Property Rights not only safeguard the innovations developed by our scientists but also ensure that the fruits of their creativity contribute meaningfully to the economy,” he said.

The event featured two in-depth lectures, including one by Principal Scientist T. Sujatha, who leads the Institute Technology Management Unit at ICAR-CIARI. Sujatha highlighted practical aspects of IPR management and urged young researchers to proactively engage with intellectual property systems to safeguard their work and maximize its impact.

World Intellectual Property Day, observed globally, serves as an opportunity to reflect on the systems that enable innovation to flourish. For research institutions like ICAR-CIARI, it is a reminder of the importance of combining scientific excellence with legal safeguards that ensure innovations reach the public while rewarding creators.

Participants engaged actively in the sessions, discussing recent technological advances, emerging trends in IPR, and the challenges of protecting intellectual assets in a rapidly evolving research landscape. The event also provided networking opportunities for young scientists to connect with seasoned experts and explore pathways for translating their research into real-world applications.

By spotlighting intellectual property, ICAR-CIARI reaffirms its commitment to supporting the research community not just through scientific resources, but also through capacity-building in legal and innovation management domains. The institute’s efforts are aligned with broader national goals to strengthen India’s intellectual property ecosystem and position the country as a global leader in science and technology.
