Sri Vijaya Puram, July 13: Campbell Bay Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of 38-year-old Kartik Mondal, barely hours after the victim was found dead near the Fish Landing Jetty, bringing a breakthrough in a case that initially began as an unexplained death under investigation.
The development comes a day after police launched a probe into Mondal’s death after his body was discovered on the morning of July 11. At the time, authorities had stated that the exact circumstances surrounding the death were yet to be established while keeping all possibilities open during the investigation.
According to sources, the accused has been identified as Guman Samad. Preliminary investigation indicates that an argument reportedly broke out between Samad and Mondal over a personal matter, following which the accused allegedly assaulted Mondal with an iron rod.
Sources said the accused allegedly struck Mondal repeatedly, including multiple blows to his face, causing fatal injuries. Police have recovered the alleged iron rod used in the assault. Investigators are continuing the probe to establish the exact motive behind the crime and reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the murder.
Police said information regarding the incident was received at Police Station Campbell Bay during the early hours of July 11, 2026, indicating that a murder had taken place near the footpath of the Fish Landing Jetty.
Following the information, police teams immediately reached the scene, secured the crime scene and initiated forensic and investigative procedures. During the operation, investigators collected technical and biological evidence from the spot and recovered the alleged weapon of offence.
Police subsequently apprehended the accused within two hours of receiving the information. A case has been taken up for further investigation to establish all circumstances connected with the offence.
Kartik Mondal, a resident of Campbell Bay, was living alone on the island while his family resides on the mainland. According to available information, he earned his livelihood by catching and selling crabs in the area.
The investigation is continuing, and police are examining all evidence collected during the course of the inquiry to complete the investigation and establish the full circumstances surrounding the murder.
