The Budget Session of Parliament commenced on Wednesday with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, outlining the government’s policy priorities and long-term vision, including the goal of building a Viksit Bharat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the President’s Address as comprehensive and forward-looking, stating that it reflected India’s development trajectory in recent years and provided a clear roadmap for the future. In a post on social media platform X, Modi said the address carried special significance in parliamentary tradition as it defines the policy direction and collective resolve guiding the nation’s development agenda.
According to the Prime Minister, the address effectively captured India’s aspiration for a strong and self-reliant nation, while highlighting sustained efforts focused on farmers, youth, the poor and marginalised sections. He said the emphasis on accelerating reforms, innovation and good governance reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining growth momentum.
The Budget Session marks a key phase in the parliamentary calendar, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman scheduled to present the Economic Survey on January 29, followed by the Union Budget on February 1. The session is expected to witness extensive deliberations on economic policy, governance priorities and legislative business.
In her address, President Murmu reflected on India’s recent progress and described the past year as a significant chapter in the country’s journey of rapid development and cultural richness. She identified 2026 as a crucial foundation year in India’s path towards becoming a developed nation, noting that the conclusion of the first 25 years of the new millennium had been marked by achievements, national pride and transformative experiences.
The President observed that over the past decade, India has strengthened its foundations across major sectors, creating a robust base for future growth. She emphasised that the country’s advancement has been supported by sustained efforts in governance, infrastructure and social development.
The address also underscored the importance of historical remembrance in shaping the nation’s future. President Murmu referred to the observance of the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Tegh Bahadur, noting that his sacrifice continues to inspire the nation. She also recalled the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, highlighting his legacy for tribal communities and the broader struggle for justice.
She further referenced the celebrations marking the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, which reinforced the idea of national unity, as well as events commemorating the birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika, which she said fostered cultural harmony and collective pride.
The President said honouring the contributions of past leaders and freedom fighters plays a critical role in inspiring younger generations and strengthening the collective pursuit of a developed and inclusive India.
Ahead of the session, an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was held on Tuesday to ensure smooth conduct of parliamentary proceedings. Leaders from various political parties outlined their priorities, with the Congress indicating that it would raise people-centric issues, including concerns related to electoral processes, paddy procurement and aspects of rural employment schemes.
The Budget Session is expected to continue with debates on economic performance, governance challenges and legislative proposals in the coming days.
