A community-focused sporting event marked the observance of Police Raising Week in Baratang as Police Station Baratang organised a beach volleyball tournament at Baludera Beach, drawing participation from local teams and spectators while also serving as a platform for legal awareness.
The tournament saw six teams competing in a series of matches that unfolded throughout the day, attracting considerable local interest. After multiple rounds of play, Krishna Nagar Brothers emerged as the winners of the tournament, while Oralkatcha Boys-A secured the runner-up position. Prizes were distributed to the finalist teams at the conclusion of the event, bringing the sporting segment of the celebration to a close.
Beyond competition, the programme was designed to strengthen engagement between the police and the local community. As part of the gathering, attendees were sensitised about the New Justice Laws, with an emphasis on explaining their provisions in simple and accessible terms. The awareness effort aimed to enhance public understanding of recent legal reforms and clarify how these laws impact citizens in their daily interactions with the justice system.
Police Raising Week is observed annually to commemorate the formation of the police force and to reaffirm its role in maintaining law and order while building trust within communities. In Baratang, the observance was structured around participatory activities rather than ceremonial events, reflecting an effort to encourage informal interaction between police personnel and residents.
The choice of a beach volleyball tournament aligned with this outreach approach, offering a familiar and inclusive setting for engagement. Organisers noted that such activities help create a relaxed environment where information sharing and dialogue can take place without formality, particularly in geographically dispersed island regions where access to legal awareness programmes is limited.
The event also highlighted the role of sports as a tool for community bonding, especially among youth. Teams drawn from different localities competed in a spirit of sportsmanship, while spectators gathered along the shoreline, turning the tournament into a social occasion as well as a civic one.
Officials involved in the programme indicated that Police Raising Week activities across the islands are intended not only to commemorate institutional history but also to reinforce the police’s commitment to public service, transparency, and awareness-building.
By combining a recreational event with legal sensitisation, the Baratang programme reflected a broader shift towards community-oriented policing, where public participation and awareness are seen as essential components of effective law enforcement.
