Sri Vijaya Puram, April 27: In a move aimed at strengthening archival management and enhancing professional exposure for young graduates, the Archives Department has introduced a short-term internship programme for candidates who have recently completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
The initiative seeks to bridge academic learning with practical experience by engaging trained interns in core archival functions while simultaneously supporting the department’s ongoing documentation and preservation work. Officials stated that the programme is designed to build technical capacity in archival practices and improve employability among history graduates.
The internship will run for a duration of three months, with the possibility of extension for an additional three months based on performance. Any extension will be subject to approval by the Secretary (Archives).
The programme will provide structured hands-on training in key areas of archival management, including preservation of historical records, cataloguing, indexing, digitisation, and data entry. Interns will also be involved in basic mending and binding of old records, along with assistance in research and documentation-related tasks.
According to the department, the selection process will be strictly merit-based. Only candidates who have completed a B.A. in History from a recognised university within the current academic year or the preceding two years will be eligible to apply. Selection will be determined on the basis of aggregate marks obtained in the degree programme.
Authorities have clarified that no interviews will be conducted for the selection process. A merit list will be prepared based on academic performance. In case of a tie in aggregate scores, preference will be given to candidates with higher marks in History honours or core papers.
A total of 10 interns will be engaged under the programme. Selected candidates will receive a consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000 per month during the internship period.
On completion of the programme, interns will be awarded a certificate of completion, provided they successfully fulfil assigned responsibilities and maintain satisfactory performance throughout the tenure.
The Archives Department has invited applications from eligible candidates who meet the educational and academic criteria. Interested applicants are required to submit their applications on plain paper along with bio-data, copies of degree certificates, mark sheets, and valid identity proof.
Applications must be addressed to the Assistant Secretary (Archives), A&N Archives, Secretariat, Sri Vijaya Puram, and submitted on or before May 10, 2026.
The programme is positioned as a structured effort to support archival operations while providing young history graduates with exposure to real-time archival systems and preservation methodologies.
