Sri Vijaya Puram, April 13: History-making long jumper and global athletics icon Anju Bobby George brought star power and inspiration to young athletes of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during a felicitation ceremony hosted at Netaji Sports Complex by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.
The first Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships (bronze, 2003), Anju shared anecdotes from her athletic journey, starting at age five, navigating setbacks, and eventually becoming an international star. Now serving as the ambassador for the ANC–ANA Half Marathon 2025, her visit left an indelible impact on the 250 sports trainees present.
During an interactive session, she emphasized staying focused, reducing screen time, avoiding drugs, and trusting one’s ability. “Failures aren’t the end. They’re teachers. Let your passion guide your discipline,” she told the packed audience.
Vikram Singh, Director (S&YA), welcomed the sports icon and gave a briefing on the ongoing free coaching initiatives in the islands. A vote of thanks was delivered by Mohd. Sadique, Coach, SAI, Sri Vijaya Puram.
