Andaman Observes Statistics Day, Celebrates 75 Years of National Sample Survey

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 29: The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, observed Statistics Day today by celebrating the legacy of noted statistician P.C. Mahalanobis and marking 75 years of the National Sample Survey (NSS). The event was attended by statistical personnel from multiple departments and featured addresses by senior officials, including Assistant Director Bappa Saha from the National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division, Sri Vijaya Puram.

In his address, Saha acknowledged the enduring contribution of the NSS since its inception in 1950. He highlighted its role in enabling scientific sampling methods that produce accurate, timely, and reliable data for evidence-based decision-making across governance, planning, and economic development.

Director of Economics & Statistics, Gaurang Mishra, welcomed the attendees and stressed the importance of Statistical Day as a platform to reinforce the value of data in administration and governance. He added that the observance is not just symbolic, but a reminder of the continuous effort required to improve statistical literacy and institutional capability across departments.

Statistics Day is celebrated annually on June 29 to honour the birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for India’s modern statistical architecture. Recognised as the father of Indian statistics, Mahalanobis was instrumental in setting up the Indian Statistical Institute and introducing the concept of large-scale sample surveys in India. His work enabled India to establish structured, data-driven frameworks for economic and social policymaking, including planning, poverty estimation, and employment mapping. The National Sample Survey, established under his leadership, remains a cornerstone of the country’s data ecosystem.

The event also emphasised the need for greater coordination among departments in improving data collection, analysis, and reporting. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Statistical Officer Ragini Sakthi, reiterating the Directorate’s commitment to building a stronger, more reliable statistical system in the islands.
