Government Schools in A&N Islands Conclude Academic Year with Annual Athletic Meets

Date:

Government schools across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands marked the academic year with large-scale annual athletic meets, as students participated in competitive and ceremonial events highlighting the role of sports in school education and overall development.

The 35th Annual Athletic Meet of Government Senior Secondary School, Delanipur, was held at the school premises, drawing participation from students across age groups. The event opened with the administering of the oath to sportspersons, followed by track and field competitions conducted throughout the day. The meet concluded with a prize distribution ceremony recognising students who excelled in various sporting events.

The school-level sporting programme emphasised physical fitness alongside academics, reflecting the education department’s focus on balanced student development. The meet also provided a platform for students to demonstrate discipline, teamwork and leadership through structured sporting competition.

Similarly, the 50th Annual Athletic Meet of PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School, Ramakrishnapur, marked a significant milestone as the institution celebrated its golden jubilee year. The programme commenced with the hoisting of the school flag, a ceremonial march-past and the lighting of the athletic torch, symbolising continuity in sports education over five decades.

Students from different classes participated in a range of athletic events, with the programme concluding in a closing ceremony followed by the distribution of prizes. The event reflected sustained institutional emphasis on sports as a core component of school education.

Education officials and representatives from local self-government institutions attended the events, highlighting community engagement with school-level sports programmes. The athletic meets were conducted in the presence of teaching staff, school management committee members and parents, reinforcing the role of schools as community centres for youth development.

School authorities noted that annual athletic meets serve as an important platform for identifying sporting talent at an early stage while encouraging mass participation among students. Such events also promote values such as fair play, perseverance and respect for rules, which are considered integral to character-building in school education.

The conduct of athletic meets across government schools is aligned with broader initiatives to integrate sports into the academic calendar and encourage regular physical activity among students. In recent years, schools in the islands have increasingly focused on structured sports programmes to complement classroom learning.

The golden jubilee celebrations at Ramakrishnapur added a historical dimension to the sporting event, reflecting the evolution of school sports infrastructure and participation over the decades. The combination of ceremonial elements and competitive events highlighted continuity in educational traditions while adapting to contemporary approaches to student development.

Both athletic meets concluded without incident, with organisers noting smooth coordination and enthusiastic participation from students. The events underscored the importance of sustained investment in school sports facilities and regular opportunities for students to engage in organised physical activities.

With the academic year drawing to a close, such athletic meets are expected to continue across schools in the islands, reinforcing the role of sports in nurturing healthy, disciplined and confident students.
