Sri Vijaya Puram, July 21: The Andaman and Nicobar Police on july 20 launched its first-ever 21-day Intensive Training Programme on Marine Policing for 46 Home Guard Volunteers, marking a step towards strengthening coastal security and enhancing the Union Territory’s maritime policing capabilities.
The training programme was inaugurated at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute (NSCBPTI), Sri Vijaya Puram, by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Police Marine Force) Jitendra Kumar Meena in the presence of Superintendent of Police (Police Marine Force) Shweta K. Sugathan, Principal, NSCBPTI, Uma Shankar, and other senior police officers.
Jointly organised by the Police Marine Force and NSCBPTI, the training will be conducted from July 20 to August 9, 2026. The programme has been designed in accordance with the training framework prescribed by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in consultation with the National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP), Okha.
According to the police, the initiative has been launched in furtherance of the decisions taken during the Directors General of Police and Inspectors General of Police Conference-2025 to strengthen coastal policing and maritime security.
During the programme, the 46 Home Guard Volunteers will undergo classroom sessions, practical training, field exercises and assessments. The curriculum also includes coordinated training with the Indian Coast Guard to enhance operational preparedness in marine policing.
Addressing the participants, Jitendra Kumar Meena highlighted the strategic importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and emphasised the role of a trained Home Guard Volunteer force in strengthening coastal surveillance, preventing illegal activities and responding effectively to maritime emergencies and disasters. He urged the participants to complete the training with discipline, dedication and professionalism.
Speaking on the occasion, Shweta K. Sugathan described the programme as an important initiative to develop a skilled Home Guard Volunteer force capable of supporting Police Marine Force operations. She said the training would prepare volunteers for vessel operations, coastal surveillance, search and rescue operations, disaster response and maintenance of marine assets.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police stated that the initiative reflects its continued focus on enhancing maritime security through modern, practical and technology-driven training programmes. The force said such initiatives are aimed at strengthening the coastal security framework of the Union Territory.
