Andaman and Nicobar Administration Urges Public to Conserve Water Amid Monsoon Deficit

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has raised an alert over a significant shortfall in rainfall during the ongoing North East Monsoon, which has led to decreased reservoir levels, reduced groundwater recharge, and diminished surface water sources across the Union Territory. Authorities have expressed concern over the potential impact on drinking water availability in the coming months.

The Administration has appealed to citizens, institutions, and commercial establishments to cooperate in conserving water. Officials emphasized that potable water should be used primarily for essential purposes such as drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene. Non-essential activities, including washing vehicles, excessive watering of gardens, and similar uses, have been discouraged to ensure water availability for community needs.

Residents and organizations have been urged to maintain internal water infrastructure diligently. Repairing leaking taps, pipelines, and fittings promptly can significantly reduce wastage and bolster conservation efforts.

Construction agencies have been specifically advised to make alternate arrangements for water requirements and to refrain from using piped drinking water supplies for construction purposes, ensuring domestic needs are not compromised. The Administration noted that these measures are vital to maintain fair and equitable distribution of water across the Union Territory.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have highlighted the importance of collective action to mitigate the challenges posed by the monsoon deficit. Public participation in responsible water use, they said, is critical to avoid a potential crisis.

Officials stressed that the impact of reduced rainfall can be managed through collective conservation practices, urging all sections of society to contribute. “Together We Can,” the Administration stated, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts in ensuring water sustainability.

The Administration continues to coordinate closely with local bodies to track water storage levels and distribution patterns, aiming to prevent shortages while maintaining uninterrupted supply for essential needs. Citizens are encouraged to adopt water-saving practices at home, workplaces, and public spaces to support ongoing conservation campaigns.

The current monsoon deficit serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of the islands’ water resources and the importance of proactive conservation. Authorities warned that sustained responsible usage by the public and institutions will play a decisive role in addressing potential shortages and maintaining access to potable water.

The Administration reiterated its appeal, stressing that compliance with water-saving measures and awareness of the monsoon’s impact is crucial for ensuring sustainable water management across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
