Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Date:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 27 to November 29. Residents and stakeholders have been advised to take necessary precautions as the weather system is expected to affect multiple areas across the archipelago.

According to the IMD forecast, Nicobar Island is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 cm at one or two places on November 27, while thunderstorms with gusty winds of 50-60 kmph and lightning are expected over several parts of the islands. On November 28, Nicobar is again expected to receive heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm, with similar thunderstorm conditions over the Andaman Islands. November 29 will continue to see heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) over Nicobar, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph affecting the Andaman group.

Local authorities have responded to the forecast by hoisting Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at Sri Vijaya Puram Port to alert vessels, port staff, and traders of potential weather-related hazards. The advisory aims to ensure safe operations at ports and protect life and property during periods of intense rainfall and storm activity.

The IMD emphasized that thunderstorms combined with strong winds and lightning pose risks for marine operations, power infrastructure, and outdoor activities. Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging, secure loose structures, and refrain from unnecessary travel during the peak hours of the storms.

Authorities also highlighted the need for fishermen and other seafarers to exercise caution while at sea, as rough conditions and high winds could make navigation hazardous. Local administration, disaster response teams, and port officials are on alert and coordinating measures to mitigate potential disruptions to transport, power supply, and daily activities.

The IMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely and will issue updated advisories as needed. Residents are encouraged to follow official bulletins and take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves, their families, and property.

With the upcoming heavy rains and stormy conditions, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are preparing for potential impacts on port operations, transportation, and daily life, ensuring readiness for swift response to emergencies and effective management of risks posed by the intense weather system.
