Andaman & Nicobar Bye-Elections Conclude with Multiple BJP, INC, Independent Win

Elected representatives take charge following formal announcement of official vote counts.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands witnessed bye-elections on 8 February 2026 to fill casual vacancies in multiple Gram Panchayat Member (GPM), Zilla Parishad Member (ZPM), and Ward Councillor constituencies. Voting took place for Madhupur-6 (Gram Panchayat Madhupur, Diglipur Tehsil), Bakultala-3 (Gram Panchayat Bakultala, Rangat Tehsil), Mannarghat-4 (Gram Panchayat Mannarghat, Ferrargunj Tehsil), Bambooflat-1 (Gram Panchayat Hope Town, Ferrargunj Tehsil), Mayabunder Zilla Parishad constituency, and Ward No. 17 of Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC).

Following the completion of vote counting on 10 February 2026, the Returning Officers of the respective Gram Panchayats and SVPMC declared the final results.

In Madhupur-6, Taramani Hawlader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 137 votes, defeating Geeta Roy of the Indian National Congress (INC), who polled 127 votes.

The Mayabunder Zilla Parishad constituency saw a close contest, with P. Chandrawathi of the BJP winning 1,663 votes, while INC candidate Asha Kujur received 1,554 votes.

Bakultala-3 was won by Mahesh Singh of the BJP with 82 votes, narrowly defeating INC candidate Shekar Mondal, who secured 75 votes.

In Mannarghat-4, Ashique Ali of the INC emerged victorious with 69 votes, defeating Ramjatan Lohar of the BJP, who obtained 27 votes.

Bambooflat-1 was won by B. Padmawathi of the INC, who secured 94 votes, while BJP candidate G. Rajeswari polled 37 votes.

The Ward No. 17 councillor seat at Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council was captured by Independent candidate A. Ganeshan, who received 1,056 votes. His closest competitors were Anjelina Kumari of the BJP with 932 votes, M. Bindu of the INC with 370 votes, and K. N. Verma, another Independent, with 185 votes.

The elections reflected participation from multiple political parties, including the BJP, INC, and Independent candidates, across urban and rural constituencies in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The results bring new representatives to the Gram Panchayats, Zilla Parishad, and municipal governance, filling the casual vacancies in Madhupur, Bakultala, Mannarghat, Bambooflat, Mayabunder, and Sri Vijaya Puram.

Returning Officers confirmed the integrity of the process and the official tally of votes, finalizing the winners without any reported discrepancies. These bye-elections follow procedural norms set for casual vacancies and aim to ensure continuity in local governance and administrative representation.

With the declaration of results, Madhupur, Bakultala, Mannarghat, Bambooflat, Mayabunder, and SVPMC now have duly elected representatives, reflecting the democratic participation of local communities in shaping governance at both Panchayat and municipal levels.
