Sri Vijaya Puram, May 21: Amid growing concerns over maritime security and illegal activities at sea, the Andaman and Nicobar Police have intensified coastal vigilance by engaging fishing communities through a series of Fishermen Watch Group meetings across the islands.
The initiative, conducted in coordination with key coastal security stakeholders including the Coast Guard, Fisheries Department, Forest Department and Sagar Mitras, aims to strengthen surveillance by integrating fishermen into the security framework as frontline observers.
Officials said the meetings were designed to improve coordination between enforcement agencies and local fishing communities, who play a critical role in monitoring coastal waters. Participants were sensitised on the importance of proper registration and documentation of fishing vessels, particularly dinghies, and were advised to carry all mandatory documents and safety equipment while at sea.

During the interactions, fishermen were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or illegal activities to the nearest Police Marine Force units or local police stations. Authorities highlighted that timely information from fishermen could significantly enhance response mechanisms and prevent unlawful activities along the coastline.
The Police also reiterated the use of dedicated helpline numbers, including the toll-free coastal security number 1093 and landline contacts, for reporting emergencies or unusual movements in maritime zones. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that all fishing vessels are equipped with essential safety gear such as life jackets, life buoys and Distress Alert Transmitters.
In addition to awareness sessions, fishermen received basic training and guidance on life-saving techniques and safety protocols to be followed during fishing operations. The meetings also served as a platform for fishermen to raise grievances and operational concerns directly with authorities, facilitating improved communication and trust-building.
As part of broader preparedness efforts, pre- and post-exercise meetings related to the coastal security drill “Sagar Kavach – SKV Blue-01/26” were also conducted. Officials stated that these exercises are aimed at testing and strengthening inter-agency coordination, response strategies and overall readiness against maritime threats.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police said the initiative reflects a sustained effort to build a community-based surveillance network that complements existing security infrastructure. Authorities maintained that active participation from fishermen remains essential for ensuring safety across the vast and strategically sensitive maritime boundaries of the islands.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Police stated that continued collaboration with coastal communities will remain central to enhancing maritime security and safeguarding the region against emerging threats.
