Sri Vijaya Puram, April 28: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has invited applications from eminent artists for nomination to the General Council of the Lalit Kala Akademi, as part of a national-level selection process initiated by the Ministry of Culture.
The move follows a request from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, seeking a panel of three names from the Union Territory for consideration of one nominee to its General Council. The selection process is being undertaken in accordance with Clause 5(vii) of the Akademi’s Memorandum of Association, which requires each State and Union Territory to recommend three eligible candidates in alphabetical order, including at least one woman.
Officials stated that the nominees must be distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of visual and plastic arts. Applicants are required to provide documented evidence of their work and achievements. Those who have previously served as members of the General Council or any committee of the Akademi are not eligible for consideration.
The selected nominee will serve a term of three years on the General Council, with eligibility limited to a maximum of two non-successive terms, as per the governing provisions.
In this regard, the Administration has opened the application process for artists from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands who meet the prescribed criteria. Interested candidates have been asked to submit their bio-data along with supporting documents, including details of their work, present address, and contact information.
Applications can be submitted to the Director (Art and Culture), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, at the Cellular Jail Complex, or sent via email to the official address provided by the department. The last date for submission is May 4, 2026.
The initiative aims to identify and recommend suitable candidates who can represent the artistic community of the Islands at the national level. The General Council of the Lalit Kala Akademi plays a key role in shaping policies, programmes, and initiatives related to the promotion of visual arts across the country.
Officials indicated that the nomination process offers an opportunity for artists from the Islands to contribute to national cultural discourse and decision-making in the field of art and culture. The emphasis remains on selecting individuals with proven artistic merit and a record of meaningful contribution.
The process also highlights the role of regional representation in national cultural institutions, ensuring that diverse artistic voices are included in policy and programme development.
The Administration noted that one of the three recommended candidates will be selected for nomination to the General Council, enabling representation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Akademi’s governing body.
The call for applications is part of the ongoing effort to engage the artistic community and strengthen institutional participation from the Islands in national cultural platforms.
