A&N Revives Records Survey for Historical Preservation

Date:

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has reconstituted the Regional Records Survey Committee (RRSC) along with three District Records Survey Sub-Committees for the South Andaman, Middle & North Andaman, and Nicobar districts. The sub-committees will be led by the respective District Deputy Commissioners and are tasked with cataloguing historical records, documents, photographs, and manuscripts relevant to the islands’ past.

The move is part of a renewed effort to safeguard and digitise the union territory’s historical legacy. A meeting chaired by the Secretary (Archives) was held at the Mini Conference Hall of the Secretariat, with representatives from the National Archives of India and other committee members offering strategic guidance for the initiative.

Private individuals and institutions holding valuable historical material have been urged to share or donate their records for archival preservation. The administration has pledged to cover the costs associated with reproducing or photocopying these records and will provide due acknowledgement to all contributors.

The collected materials will be stored at the A&N Archives in the Secretariat, where they will be accessible to researchers, students, and the general public, ensuring that the documented history of the islands is preserved and made available for future generations.
