Sunroof Misuse in Moving Vehicles to Attract Jail Term, Traffic Police Issues Strict Warning

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 25: Misuse of vehicle sunroofs in moving vehicles has come under strict scrutiny, with traffic authorities warning that such actions will invite penal consequences under existing road safety laws due to the risks posed to passengers and other road users.

Officials have flagged instances where individuals stand, sit, or extend themselves outside vehicles through sunroofs while in motion, describing the practice as a dangerous violation of traffic regulations. Authorities clarified that sunroofs are designed solely for ventilation and not for any activity that compromises safety.

The warning highlights the potential hazards associated with such behaviour, including loss of balance, sudden braking, or collisions that could result in serious injuries. Traffic officials noted that such actions not only endanger those inside the vehicle but also create unpredictable risks for other motorists and pedestrians.

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, misuse of sunroofs falls under dangerous driving provisions. Authorities stated that offenders may face imprisonment ranging from six months to one year, a monetary penalty between ₹1,000 and ₹5,000, or both. In addition, the driving licence of the offender may be suspended for a period of three months.

Enforcement action has already been initiated in at least one instance, where a challan was issued against a vehicle after occupants were found protruding through the sunroof while the vehicle was in motion. Officials indicated that such violations will continue to be monitored and acted upon as part of ongoing traffic enforcement measures.

The advisory reflects a broader effort to address unsafe driving practices and reinforce compliance with road safety norms. Authorities emphasised that such acts are not minor infractions but serious violations that can lead to life-threatening consequences.

Traffic police have urged the public to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and avoid engaging in risky behaviour while travelling. The warning underscores the need for responsible conduct on roads to ensure safety for all users.
