The Andaman & Nicobar Police observed National Police Commemoration Day on October 21 with solemnity and respect, paying tribute to the brave personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. The observance featured a formal parade and wreath-laying ceremony at the Parade Ground, Police Lines, attended by senior officers, families of martyrs, and retired police personnel.
The ceremony was led by Shri Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, along with other senior officials of the A&N Police. The event provided a platform to honour the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of police personnel who risk and often lose their lives in the service of the nation.
Families of fallen officers were present to witness the homage paid to their loved ones. Retired Deputy Superintendents of Police and other former officers also participated, underscoring the enduring bonds within the police community and the collective respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
During the ceremony, dignitaries highlighted the critical role of the police in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law. Special recognition was given to the selfless dedication and bravery demonstrated by officers in the line of duty, emphasizing that their sacrifices are foundational to the security and stability of the country.
October 21 is observed nationally to commemorate the ten Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who were martyred in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. Since then, National Police Commemoration Day has served as a day to honour not only these ten personnel but all police officers across India who have laid down their lives in service to the nation.
To preserve the memory of these martyrs, a National Police Memorial, known as “Shaheed Vedi,” has been established at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Every year, representatives from police forces across India gather at the memorial to pay their respects, reflecting a nationwide commitment to honouring courage, sacrifice, and duty.
The observance in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands mirrored this national spirit, reinforcing the values of service, vigilance, and dedication that define the police profession. Officers in attendance reiterated the importance of remembering fallen colleagues and maintaining traditions that inspire both current and future generations of police personnel.
