India is moving closer to realizing its vision of becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, with the Adani Group and Google Cloud constructing a $15 billion AI data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, the largest outside the United States, according to a Newsweek report.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized India’s need to “lead the world in the responsible use of artificial intelligence and build the infrastructure that powers it,” and the project reflects the country’s growing technological ambitions. The Visakhapatnam AI hub, spanning a multi-year investment from 2026 to 2030, will include gigawatt-scale compute capacity, aligning with India’s goal of a digitally advanced and energy-efficient economy.

The Newsweek report highlights that this initiative represents a turning point in India’s AI ecosystem. Google’s investment in the country is its largest to date, designed to “democratize technology” and provide infrastructure for domestic and global digital services. The data centre campus will be built using cutting-edge technology akin to the systems powering Google Search, Workspace, and YouTube.

The Adani Group has been pivotal in laying the groundwork for this AI expansion. Chairman Gautam Adani identified in 2021 that data centres would drive “infinite energy demand,” and committed to clean energy as the foundation for computing infrastructure. In 2022, Adani Green Energy announced a $70 billion investment in renewable energy, covering solar, wind, and energy storage, with the aim of powering data-centric operations sustainably.

Operational strategies began to materialize in 2023 through the AdaniConneX joint venture, targeting 1 GW of data centre capacity and launching Adani AI Labs. The acquisition of Coredge in 2024 further strengthened India’s sovereign cloud capabilities. By 2025, the collaborative $15 billion Adani-Google AI campus emerged as a flagship initiative integrating energy, fibre connectivity, ports, data centres, and cloud networks.

Industry estimates suggest that India’s AI market will grow from $1 billion in 2024 to $8 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate exceeding 40 percent. The country already generates over 8 exabytes of data daily, a number expected to rise sharply, underscoring the need for high-capacity computing infrastructure.

The Visakhapatnam AI hub will also involve partnerships with AdaniConneX and Airtel, creating an “energy-to-compute” ecosystem. This design links renewable energy generation to data centre operations, ensuring a sustainable model for India’s growing digital economy.

Experts describe the project as India’s “foundation for an AI skyscraper,” demonstrating the convergence of clean energy, advanced technology, and strategic infrastructure planning. With its massive scale and forward-looking approach, the Adani-Google initiative is set to redefine the country’s role in global AI development.
