In a significant breakthrough, the Ograbraj Police team cracked a blind theft case within just eleven days, recovering gold ornaments worth more than ₹4 lakh. The swift action came after a resident of Namunaghar reported the burglary earlier this month, leading to the arrest of the accused and the recovery of the stolen jewellery from a finance company in Junglighat.
The case began on October 2 when a resident, identified as B. Gurumurthy, lodged a complaint at Ograbraj Police Station. He reported that on returning home from a religious event, he found the main door lock of his house broken and discovered that a small bag containing gold and silver ornaments had been stolen. The stolen items included gold earrings, a chain, a finger ring, and an ear chain (matti).
A special police team led by Inspector Stalin N.S., Station House Officer of PS Ograbraj, was formed to investigate the theft. The team included ASI P. Vinodh (Investigating Officer), Head Constables S. Yamant Rao, Ashok Roy, and Nelson, and Police Constables Rajdhari Yadav, Abubacker Sidique, Rohan Lall, V.M. Shahid, Shahir, Sunita, and Richa Chand. Their coordinated effort, marked by field verification, review of habitual offenders, and use of local intelligence, proved crucial in solving the case.
Through sustained surveillance and community input, the police identified a suspect who had been seen near the complainant’s residence around the time of the incident. The suspect was tracked down and apprehended from Junglighat on October 13. During interrogation, he voluntarily confessed to the crime, admitting that he had broken the door lock with a stone, stolen the jewellery, and subsequently pledged it at Muthoot Fincorp in Junglighat for ₹2.56 lakh.
Acting on the confession, the police team immediately visited the finance firm and successfully recovered the stolen ornaments, including three pairs of earrings, one gold chain, one pair of matti, and a gold ring. The seized items were recovered in the presence of independent witnesses, ensuring full compliance with legal and procedural requirements.
Following the recovery, the accused was produced before the Hon’ble Court on October 14 and was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. The entire operation was conducted under the supervision of Inspector Stalin N.S. and the command of Brij Mohan Meena, DANIPS, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Bambooflat.
The police department commended the investigating team for its prompt response, meticulous investigation, and effective coordination, which led to the swift resolution of the case. Such efficient policing has once again reinforced public confidence in law enforcement across the Andaman Islands.
