Sri Vijaya Puram, June 14: Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has urged the Centre to replace Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi, citing growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration. In a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday, Ray called for the appointment of a development-focused, welfare-oriented leader to steer the Union Territory forward.
In a statement from his office, Ray said the Home Minister assured him that the matter would be taken seriously and indicated that a leadership change was under consideration.
The MP also raised concerns over the inadequate financial support for local governance bodies, including Panchayati Raj Institutions and the Port Blair Municipal Council. Ray pointed out that several essential infrastructure projects—such as road construction, water pipelines, and civic upgrades—have been stalled for over three years due to funding cuts. He said the Home Minister agreed to look into the matter and would meet with PRI representatives within ten days for further discussion.
Healthcare was another major point of concern. Ray flagged what he described as a steady decline in medical services across the islands, and urged urgent intervention to upgrade infrastructure and delivery systems. The Home Minister reportedly assured him that the issue would be addressed on priority.
Ray also sought the Centre’s help in strengthening the BJP’s local unit, requesting the immediate appointment of a new State President and General Secretary (Organisation) for the party’s island wing. The statement said Shah agreed to expedite the process.
The MP concluded by thanking the Home Minister for his time and for offering assurances on the various issues raised.
