Air India Plane Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport, 242 On Board; Rescue Ops Underway

The London-bound Air India flight went down minutes after takeoff; visuals show smoke billowing near the Meghaninagar area as rescue efforts continue.

Ahmedabad, June 12 (IANS): A London-bound Air India aircraft with 130 passengers on board crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred near the Meghaninagar area, triggering a large-scale emergency response.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a thick column of grey smoke rising from the crash site, visible from several parts of the city including Vastrapur. Emergency personnel, including fire and rescue teams, were dispatched to the scene within minutes.

Visuals from the site show the wreckage amid dense smoke, as rescue workers attempt to reach the aircraft. The area has been cordoned off, and authorities have urged the public to avoid the vicinity while operations continue.

Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash or provided details on casualties or injuries. Airport authorities and local administration are coordinating with disaster response units for evacuation and containment.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to initiate an investigation into the incident.

Air India confirmed that Flight AI171, operating the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route, was involved in an incident on June 12, 2025. In an official statement, a spokesperson for the airline said that they are currently ascertaining the details of the incident and will share further updates at the earliest. Passengers and the public have been advised to monitor the airline’s official website (www.airindia.com) and its X (formerly Twitter) handle (@airindia) for verified information.
