Sri Vijaya Puram, November 5: A tsunami awareness programme at Car Nicobar has focused on preparing coastal communities to recognise natural warning signs, understand evacuation procedures and respond to emergency alerts, as disaster management authorities continue preparedness initiatives across 30 identified coastal villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The District Administration, Nicobar, organised the outreach programme at Mus Community Hall, Car Nicobar, on November 4 as part of the ongoing Tsunami Ready Programme. The initiative seeks to strengthen community awareness of tsunami hazards and improve preparedness for emergencies among residents of vulnerable coastal settlements.
The programme covered key aspects of tsunami preparedness, including the causes of tsunamis, their potential impact and the natural indicators that may signal an approaching threat. Participants also received information on early warning systems, tsunami alerts and emergency communication procedures.

Particular attention was given to evacuation preparedness, with community members briefed on the importance of identifying safe locations, knowing designated evacuation routes and following prescribed safety protocols during a tsunami emergency.
The Directorate of Disaster Management, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, is conducting the outreach initiative in coordination with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, and the district administrations of South Andaman, North and Middle Andaman, and Nicobar.
The broader Tsunami Ready Programme covers 30 identified coastal villages across the islands, with outreach activities aimed at improving public understanding of tsunami risks and the response measures required during emergencies.
The programme places community-level awareness at the centre of preparedness efforts, focusing on whether residents understand warning signals, can access emergency information and know the evacuation procedures to follow when a tsunami threat arises.
