ABDM Completes Five Years as Andaman and Nicobar Deepens Digital Health Adoption

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, October 3: The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has completed five years of its national rollout, with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands continuing to expand digital health services aimed at making healthcare delivery more connected and accessible across the geographically dispersed Union Territory.

The Government of India’s flagship digital health programme completed five years on September 27, 2026. ABDM seeks to establish a digital healthcare ecosystem that enables the seamless and consent-based exchange of health information through interoperable digital systems.

The Union Territory has been part of the digital health transformation from its early stages. It was among six Union Territories where the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM), the precursor to ABDM, was launched on a pilot basis in August 2020, ahead of the nationwide rollout of ABDM on September 27, 2021.

Implementation across the Islands has since focused on bringing public and private healthcare facilities and health professionals onto the digital health network. This includes registration under the Health Facility Registry (HFR) and Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), creation of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA), and adoption of ABDM-enabled Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).

South Andaman has been identified as an ABDM Model District, with efforts focused on accelerating the adoption of digital health services across healthcare facilities in both the public and private sectors.

For citizens, the digital infrastructure provides services intended to simplify access to healthcare information and registration. ABHA provides a unique digital health identity through which individuals can securely link and access health records generated by different healthcare providers using ABDM-enabled systems.

ABDM-enabled HMIS, along with Scan & Share and ABHA-based registration, is also supporting the shift away from conventional paper-based processes. Scan & Share enables convenient, queue-less registration at participating healthcare facilities.

The next phase of implementation will focus on deeper adoption, stronger interoperability and improved digital health service delivery, particularly to ensure that the benefits extend across urban, rural and geographically dispersed areas of the Islands.

The five-year milestone also marks the continuation of efforts to build a citizen-centric and digitally empowered healthcare system based on connected and interoperable services.

The Programme Management Unit (PMU), ABDM, Directorate of Health Services, A&N Administration, is coordinating with the National Health Authority and other stakeholders to further strengthen the digital health ecosystem across the Union Territory.
