Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 23: Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) has ordered an intensive shoreline cleaning and sanitation drive at Prem Nagar’s seafront and Burning Ghat area in Ward No. 07, following a joint inspection across Wards No. 06, 07 and 09 on September 11, 2026. The action will target abandoned boats, damaged vessels, scrap, unauthorised temporary structures and accumulated debris that officials found obstructing the coastal area and contributing to waste accumulation.
The municipal council’s move places the responsibility on boat owners, commercial operators and residents to clear or relocate property that could obstruct the cleaning operation. SVPMC said the clearance is being undertaken as part of efforts to address public nuisance, improve environmental sanitation and restore the condition of the shoreline.
During the inspection, officials identified a significant number of abandoned, damaged and redundant boats and vessels along the shore. The council said these vessels have contributed substantially to the accumulation of waste and affected the natural appearance of the coastal stretch.
Under the directions issued after the inspection, owners of boats and vessels have been asked to remove redundant boat components, old hulls and vessel scrap left along the shoreline. Owners of operational fishing boats and commercial vessels have also been directed to move and anchor their vessels at least 20 metres away from the shoreline before the cleaning work begins.
Residents living in adjoining areas have been instructed to protect their belongings and remove unauthorised sheds and temporary structures that could obstruct the worksite. The directions are intended to provide sufficient space for the municipal cleaning operation and the movement of heavy equipment.
SVPMC will deploy an excavator to remove accumulated silt and waste from the area. The cleaning schedule will be coordinated with tidal movements to facilitate the operation and maintain safety during the work.
The council has also issued a warning concerning private property left within the area during the enforcement and cleaning operation. It said it will not be responsible for collateral damage to boats, vessels, structures or other private property that remains within the work zone.
The municipal body has called on residents, fishermen and commercial boat operators to cooperate with the clearance exercise as the council proceeds with the planned sanitation and shoreline cleaning at Prem Nagar.
