Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 11: Livestock farmers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands received field-level training on scientific goat and pig farming on Friday, as the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services conducted programmes under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) at Junglighat and Campbell Bay.
The programmes focused on improving farmers’ knowledge of animal husbandry practices linked to livestock health, management and productivity. The initiative covered goat farmers at Veterinary Hospital, Junglighat, and pig farmers through Farmers’ Field School sessions in Campbell Bay.
At Junglighat, farmers took part in a goatery training programme that covered scientific methods of rearing goats. The session addressed key aspects including appropriate housing, feeding, healthcare, breeding management and measures to prevent diseases. Farmers were also briefed on support schemes available to goat farmers under the National Livestock Mission.
In Campbell Bay, training for pig farmers was held at Rajiv Nagar Nicobari Community Hall and at the farmer’s field of Pilo Bhabi Tsunami Shelter. Conducted by the Veterinary Hospital, Campbell Bay, the Farmers’ Field School programme focused on scientific approaches to pig farming, with sessions covering feeding, housing and healthcare management.
The training sought to equip farmers with practices aimed at better livestock management, productivity and income generation. By taking the programmes to local field settings, the department continued its capacity-building activities under the National Livestock Mission for farmers engaged in animal husbandry.
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services said it would continue organising such field-level training programmes as part of its efforts to build farmers’ capacity and promote scientific animal husbandry practices across the Islands.
