Kalighat, Sept. 7: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly killed at her residence in Kalighat Ward No. 1 on September 5 after she declined a marriage proposal from a man known to her family, with police later arresting the accused and registering a murder case.
The incident occurred on the morning of September 5 when the accused allegedly went to the woman’s residence and asked her to marry him. After she refused, he allegedly became aggressive and assaulted her with an iron pipe before attacking her with a machete, causing fatal injuries.
According to information available about the incident, the accused had reportedly been in a relationship with the woman for around two years. About a week before the incident, she had allegedly told her mother that she no longer wanted to continue the relationship.

The man had reportedly spoken to the woman’s mother about marriage before asking the woman directly. After she declined and allegedly told him not to return to the house, he initially left but reportedly came back shortly afterwards and forced his way inside.
During the ensuing confrontation, the accused allegedly attacked the woman with an iron pipe. Her mother reportedly attempted to intervene and pushed her daughter outside the house in an effort to protect her.
The situation allegedly escalated again when the accused returned carrying a machete. He allegedly attacked the woman, inflicting injuries that proved fatal. Her mother, fearing for her own safety, reportedly fled towards a nearby forest.
The woman was found critically injured when police reached the location. She later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Police Station Kalighat registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The investigation was taken over by Sub-Inspector Shibendra Nath Halder, Station House Officer of Police Station Kalighat.
During the investigation, the investigating officer and a forensic team examined the scene and collected relevant corroborative evidence. The alleged weapon of offence and other relevant articles were seized as part of the investigation.
The accused was subsequently arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is in progress to establish the circumstances of the killing and examine the evidence collected during the probe.
