Andaman Coast Faces Squally Weather, Swell Surge Risk; Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 24:  The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set for several days of unsettled weather, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds forecast at isolated places, while fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea amid squally conditions along the coast.

Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 40-50 kmph and lightning are very likely at one or two places over the Islands on August 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29, according to the weather advisory.

The marine warning remains in effect along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coasts from August 23 to 27. During this period, squally weather is expected, with winds reaching 35-45 kmph and occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coasts during the five-day warning period.

The advisory has also flagged swell conditions along the coast. Swell waves with a period of 16.0-17.0 seconds and a height of 1.6-1.8 metres are forecast until 11.30 pm on August 24.

The swell conditions could lead to surging waves along the coast, prompting a cautionary advisory for boats operating in the area. Boat operators have been asked to proceed with utmost vigilance.

People undertaking recreational activities along the coast have also been advised to exercise due care in view of the expected swell conditions.

The marine warning and thunderstorm forecast cover different periods, with the coastal squally-weather advisory ending on August 27 and the thunderstorm and lightning outlook continuing through August 29.

The weather advisory comes with multiple cautions for marine and coastal activity. Fishermen have been specifically asked to stay away from the sea during the period of squally weather, while boat operators have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance because of the possibility of surging waves.

The forecast also calls for continued awareness of lightning and gusty winds at isolated locations across the Islands through August 29.

With the marine conditions expected to remain unsettled through August 27 and thunderstorms likely at isolated places through August 29, coastal and sea-based activities will require caution during the period covered by the advisories.
