Sri Vijaya Puram, August 8: The Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI), Andaman Chapter, marked the organisation’s 30th anniversary with a Founders’ Day programme in Sri Vijaya Puram on August 7, bringing students, tourism professionals and experts together to discuss domestic tourism, island heritage and responsible travel.
Held at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Auditorium under the theme “स्वदेशी पर्यटन, सशक्त भारत” (Swadeshi Paryatan, Sashakt Bharat), the programme focused on encouraging Indians to explore destinations within the country and strengthening local tourism economies. The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
ADTOI Andaman Chapter chairman M. Vinod delivered the welcome address and outlined the organisation’s three-decade journey, while highlighting the role of domestic tourism in the growth of India’s tourism sector.
The programme featured sessions covering tourism, adventure activities and the historical significance of the islands. Saeeda Banu, professor at JNRM, spoke on domestic tourism and its opportunities and importance for national development. Saikat Biswas, general secretary of AATO, discussed adventure sports and the potential for adventure tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Historian and anthropologist Pronob Sarkar presented on the historical importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, focusing on their history and heritage. The keynote address was delivered by Siva Perumal, Officer-in-Charge, ZSI, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who highlighted the significance of the islands and the need for responsible and sustainable tourism.
An interactive question-and-answer session allowed students and other participants to engage with the speakers on tourism, heritage, adventure activities and the islands’ natural wealth.
A large number of JNRM College students and ADTOI Andaman Chapter members attended the programme. The participation of students provided them an opportunity to learn about the potential of tourism and its role in nation-building.
ADTOI Andaman Chapter treasurer Mohammed Sajid proposed the vote of thanks, while Nisha conducted the programme. Vinod thanked Perumal for providing the auditorium and supporting the event, and also expressed gratitude to the principal and team of JNRM College for their cooperation.
The programme concluded with the National Anthem and a group photograph, reaffirming the chapter’s focus on domestic, responsible, cultural, historical, natural and adventure tourism in the islands.
