Sports and Anti-Drug Campaign Unite at South Andaman’s DC SP Cup Championship

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 28: The South Andaman District Administration has launched the DC SP Cup Inter-Village Volleyball Championship 2026, combining competitive sports with campaigns against substance abuse, environmental conservation and public cleanliness. Organised in collaboration with the Police Department and line departments, the initiative seeks to encourage youth participation, strengthen community engagement and promote healthier lifestyles across the district.

The championship was inaugurated at Wandoor Beach on Monday by the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, and the Superintendent of Police, South Andaman. The event was attended by senior officers of the District Administration and Police Department, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions, officials from various line departments, sportspersons, youth and local residents.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guests underscored the role of sports in shaping disciplined and confident young citizens. They said participation in sporting activities promotes physical fitness, teamwork and constructive engagement while serving as an effective deterrent against substance abuse.

The speakers encouraged young people to participate actively in sports and channel their energy towards nation-building, healthy living and community service. The championship also serves as a platform to spread awareness about the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

As part of the inaugural programme, the organisers conducted a beach cleaning drive at Wandoor Beach under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Officers, volleyball players, volunteers and local residents joined the cleanliness campaign and collectively cleaned the beach.

Participants also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining clean public spaces and protecting the coastal ecosystem, linking the sporting event with environmental awareness and community responsibility.

The championship opened with a match between Wimberlygunj Gram Panchayat and Wandoor Gram Panchayat. Wandoor Gram Panchayat secured victory in the inaugural fixture after displaying teamwork and sportsmanship before an enthusiastic gathering of spectators.

According to the organisers, the championship integrates the messages of the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and environmental protection with sporting activities to encourage young people to lead healthy, responsible and disciplined lives while making positive contributions to society.

The DC SP Cup Inter-Village Volleyball Championship 2026 will continue at various venues across South Andaman. Teams representing different Gram Panchayats will participate in the tournament, which aims to foster unity, healthy competition and collective responsibility while supporting the broader objective of building a cleaner, healthier and drug-free society through community participation.
